Life Updates

I’m currently three chapters into a book recommended by Danielle Jackson called Why Won’t You Apologize? Healing Big Betrayals and Everyday Hurts - Harriet Lerner. In this book Harriet talks about the power of a good apology, apology misses, and how a good apology can be deeply healing and transformative.

The book is filled with simple yet compelling stories that illustrate her points. Some of these stories sound a bit crazy and over the top, but they’re also incredibly relatable. I’m sure we’ve all witnesses bad apologies before-and likely delivered a few ourselves. Why are we so bad at it? Perhaps because we were never really taught how. The classic “say sorry right now” doesn’t really cut it. And then, there are apologies that never come, things that gets brushed under the carpet; things that we hope others would forget.

I remember when Edward used to ask me “Do you really need me to teach you how to apologise properly?” and I thought Yes, that would be great!

I have this post-it note that I modified from Brené Brown: she says that most people have a hard time being held accountable for something, without rationalising, blaming, or shutting down. Whenever I find myself reacting to a situation, I look at the post it note and ask myself What’s really going on here?

Apologising doesn’t give away power. On the contrary, it’s one of the most powerful tools we have to heal and mend relationships.
